Well whilst packaging is essential in the production of nearly all goods and foodstuffs, it can also be an extremely wasteful item, with most of it just being thrown away and not re-used or even recycled (or even being capable of being recycled). So there is now a large amount of focus and political pressure being put on companies to review not only the materials they use to package goods in, but also what percentage of those materials can then be recycled by the end customer. Indeed in several countries there is now a legal requirement to reduce the amount of packaging year on year by a set percentage (Which varies from country to country) or face a stiff penalty in terms of a fine, or extra corporation tax. This is now forming part of how companies look towards what is commonly known as their "Carbon footprint". Given these circumstances, companies are having to review their packaging materials and look for greener alternatives to use, as well as having to look at how to still pack goods safely, yet use less packaging overall when shipping them to end customers. However the problem is that some of the least green packaging materials such as polystyrene foam are very cheap to buy, and greener alternatives can cost a lot more, and companies are under a lot of pressure to keep the price of their goods competitive, so going green can turn out to be a double edged sword as far as packaging is concerned.
